5/24/2023 0 Comments Masha gessen the future is history![]() ![]() It is clearly written by an emigrant from Russia who hates EVERYTHING about Russia. I feel about this book the way I felt about The Bronze Horseman. Powerful and urgent, The Future Is History is a cautionary tale for our time and for all time. Gessen charts their paths against the machinations of the regime that would crush them all, and against the war it waged on understanding itself, which ensured the unobstructed reemergence of the old Soviet order in the form of today’s terrifying and seemingly unstoppable mafia state. Each of them came of age with unprecedented expectations, some as the children and grandchildren of the very architects of the new Russia, each with newfound aspirations of their own–as entrepreneurs, activists, thinkers, and writers, sexual and social beings. In The Future Is History, Gessen follows the lives of four people born at what promised to be the dawn of democracy. The essential journalist and bestselling biographer of Vladimir Putin reveals how, in the space of a generation, Russia surrendered to a more virulent and invincible new strain of autocracy.Īward-winning journalist Masha Gessen’s understanding of the events and forces that have wracked Russia in recent times is unparalleled. ![]()

I was meeting with a headhunter about maybe finding another job. I didn't get all dressed up to renew my driver's license. I lied to you earlier, and I feel horrible about it. Right before the reveal that the vote went the wrong way, Maggie told Goodwin: With the reveal that the hospital will be going for-profit, it looks like the ED could be on the verge of losing her. The timing couldn't have been worse, as Maggie was already on the fence about whether or not she wanted to stay at Gaffney Med as the charge nurse. seemed to have locked down changed at the last minute, as the man decided to support Dayton after OR 2.0 technology helped to save his life. Unfortunately, the vote didn't go Goodwin's way anyway, and the result could be a major loss to the ED. A complication arose when a board member on their side was incapacitated, but recovered enough in time to vote. As Jack Dayton pushed his agenda to turn Med into a for-profit hospital leaning more heavily on technology like OR 2.0, Goodwin and her allies scrambled to get enough board votes to stop Dayton. Chicago Med returned to NBC after nearly a month's break between new episodes in the 2023 TV schedule, and "Look Closely and You Might Hear the Truth" was a game-changer for the hospital. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Home by Harlan Coben![]() ![]() ![]() This flowed nicely and kept the suspense tight throughout even at 400 pages this book flew by so fast I half expected smoke to come off my fingertips. The book starts with immediate action, and the narrative is told alternating between Win and Myron’s POV (more Myron than Win though). Coben might have lost his touch in the years taken off from writing the escapades of his BFFs Myron and Win, but I’m happy to report that all is as it should be, and our dynamic duo is better than ever. ![]() I’ll admit, I was a little worried that Mr. I would highly recommend reading the rest of the series before picking up, say, book #11, but if you aren’t in it for the character development and solely for the mystery, I guess you could jump right in. It had been so long since I read book #10 ( Live Wire) that I had to search out some refreshers online to make sure I was up to speed, although it turns out I didn’t need them. ![]() My sister and I binge read books #1-10 of the series back in 2011 they were a different read for us as we don’t gravitate toward sports themed books, but I quickly fell in love with the quirky cast of characters, hilarious banter, and action packed mysteries found in each story. Oh my lucky stars, I cannot describe the high I am still riding after finishing this book. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The flame cohen![]() ![]() Leonard does not seem comfortable with labels like “mystic” but he is happy to use the poetry of the Spanish Mystics to express his transcendent leanings and “listing”. In this poem Leonard identifies with Cruz’s way of understanding Divinity and becomes, with the interaction of his Soul, “G~d” or what Cruz calls “god by participation”…where the individual becomes conscious of one’s own divine soul and that individual soul unifies with the Divinity's Soul, and then both soul and Soul experience co-existent Union and this "unified heart" equates to a 1st “position” of ( Leonard’s “various positions”) the transcendent mystic…man becomes god and G~d becomes man in a spiritual Holy Communion. We don’t so much have an original Leonard Cohen poem as we have an original translation and lovely interpretation of Cruz’ “Dark Night” (of the Soul). In the book The Flame, on page 18 we have the poem “The Lucky Night!!!!!”. ![]() So read on with caution as I stir the cup of crazy fragrance, all around. Well, we wallow in and around and flow in the "undertow"…Ĭhewing on Dark chocolate while sipping hot, ground black coffee with cream has its own aromas and scents some meaning to a life this is what the poetry of Leonard Cohen does for me. ![]() How can we express the ineffable? How can we each say, in our own way, what can’t be said? And how can the reader grasp what can’t quite be touched? Ambiguity, it seems, is a very alluring way to write alluring for both reader and writer. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The testament grisham![]() ![]() ![]() Although I have little first hand experience the alcoholism was well portrayed and I found Nate to be one of the most rounded characters Grisham has created.Īlthough at the start I had my doubts this is actually a good, believable and well written novel, and I hope Grisham continues to get more realism and adventure into his later novels. The plot certainly picked up in the later parts of the book, and though I found some of the religion grating at times, it is a product of the American religious climate and it was treated truly to the characters. Grisham proves here that he can write other material, and it's no surprise that his first non-legal fiction follows soon after. The writers trademark courtroom drama enters the fray. Once the opening formalities were over though things really took off, with jungle adventures taking up the middle third and finally the typical legal wranglings. Grishams story follows an 11 billion fortune left to a businessmans illegitimate daughter in Brazil. ![]() I found the early chapters which established the characters and plot a little slow going, particularly with the large cast that was introduced before we even got to the main protagonist. This leads alcoholic lawyer on a life changing mission to the South American jungles as Grisham attempts to write something more thriller than legal. Grisham stretches his wings slightly with this novel, in which a rich old man writes an unusual will and leaves his lawyers to sort its execution. ![]() ![]() ![]() Michael Schaub is a Texas-based journalist and regular contributor to NPR. ![]() “I’m honored to have the opportunity to expand this redemptive story into a film, visually expressing what Katherine so wonderfully built in her book.”Ĭenter shared news of the planned adaptation on Instagram, writing, “So!
